-SHOPPING TRIP (IFMC 2024)-
Josh’s first participation in a scoring contest was for the well renowned Indie Film Music Contest in 2024. Provided with Barry Wilkinson’s 2020 Covid short – ‘Shopping Trip’, Josh created an achingly beautiful score that emotionally detailed a journey familiar to many.
“I’d wanted to write a piece like this for such a long time. It’s like Neo Classical, alt-folk, indie rock and foley all come together into one, creating a sound that I feel honestly represents my musical goals and ambitions“.
-GRAVEYARD INN (2024)-
In 2024, Josh composed the soundtrack to a video game titled – ‘Graveyard Inn’. Graveyard Inn is a casual, cosy, ghost-themed hotel building simulator developed by North American based Abyssal Byte Games.
“I’d never written this style of music before this. It was challenging to create music that took more of a backseat role in a game but it was a very welcome change of scene“.
-FOREVER & ALWAYS (2024)-
Josh worked with a film production team to produce an intimate, emotional drama titled ‘Forever & Always’. Forever & Always tells the story of a strong relationship between two sisters.
“Though they are often my favourite, I sometimes find emotionally delicate films to be the most challenging of productions to score’. ‘Getting the right balance between emotion and drama was so key in producing a piece that sounds honest and sincere. Anything more and it may be ‘over the top’ and anything less and it may seem less sincere”.
‘”I’d never written this style of music before this. It was challenging to create music that took more of a backseat role in a game but it was a very welcome change of scene”.
-CULTURAL GHOSTS: SOUND EXHIBITION (2024)-
Cultural Ghosts was part of a Multimedia Exhibition that showcased the erasure and decay of culture in Manchester. Josh worked with 4 other artists to create an array of visual and digital art pieces that they felt represented cultural erasure.
Josh focused on his passion for Manchester’s Music and therefore wrote an Orchestral Soundscape arrangement of Joy Division’s Love Will Tear Us Apart which served as the only source of sound in this multimedia exhibition.
-SOOTY IN THE STARS (2023)-
In this project, Josh worked along side Animator – Erin Leigh-Hall to produce ‘Sooty in the Stars’. ‘Sooty in The Stars’ is a short animated film about Erin’s cat – Sooty. The film depicts how Erin’s other cats dealt with the loss of Sooty and the happy memories Sooty left behind.
“I wrote an intimate piano piece with two variations. One that celebrated bittersweet memories and nostalgia, and another that portrayed the feeling of loss and mourning“.
“I am very grateful to have been part of a project that was so personal to Erin. It was one of the great motivating factors in producing a piece of work that truly represented what Erin envisioned“.
-THE WORKING MACHINE (2022)-
Josh worked along side a film production team in Manchester to produce an abstract, socially-themed short film titled ‘The Working Machine’.
‘I wrote a short piano piece that placed a ticking clock as a narrative device within an emotionally charged, minimalistic, musical landscape”.
“Though novel at the time, this combination of organic sound design and music is something I am really enthusiastic about“.
